Laser Cutting Vs Engraving Machines

LASER CUTTING VS. ENGRAVING MACHINES

What is a laser cutting machine?

A laser cutting machine is a laser which has been optimised to cut materials at a faster speed than the specified engraving machines, with a higher standard of cut, and a slightly lower standard of engraving.

The laser cutters supplied by CTR generally have a choice of 100W or 120W Diamond laser tubes, which come with 12 months warranty and an expected laser tube life of 8,000 hours. All CTR laser machines come with unlimited telephone/email/fax support for trained persons.

What is a laser engraving machine?

A laser engraving machine is a laser which has been optimised to have a higher engraving quality than the specified cutting machines. Engraving machines will give a good laser cut result on the same range of materials that the cutting machines can handle, but due to the lower laser power they will not cut through the same thicknesses of material. For cutting thicknesses, please see the individual laser machine pages under the Products menu.

The laser engravers supplied by CTR generally have a 50W laser power, which comes under the 3 months consumables warranty. All CTR laser machines come with 12 months machine warranty, and unlimited telephone/email/fax support for trained persons.

What is the difference between a laser cutter and a laser engraver?

The main difference between specified cutting and engraving machines is the laser machine lens.

The lens focal length is shorter in the laser engraving machine to give a finer spot size when working on materials. This gives a higher quality when engraving items such as photographic images.

The longer focal length lens on the laser cutting machines is more tolerant of focus height variations, and produces less taper in the cut edge. This is more relevant for cutting thicker materials, where a cutting lens would reduce the angle of laser cut sloped edges. This would only usually be apparent on materials with a relatively large depth to them, such as 20mm acrylic or thicker.

Contact CTR Lasers

We didn't realise we had purchased more than a laser cutter from CTR. Indeed in a recent service visit, the engineer spent a lot of time demonstrating what the machine could do after he had undone our mess. He arrived with a smile the same day ...
